Emami Paper has been making profits since inception across various industry cycles. The company's revenues and cash profits registered a growth of 54% and 61% respectively for the year ended 31st March 2008.
  • Emami Paper's third machine at Balasore with an installed capacity of 85,000 tonnes per annum, by far the largest paper manufacturing machine in India; as an extension, the company has increased an aggregate installed capacity to 145,000 tonnes per annum, making it the 2nd largest newsprint maker in India. This scale will not only enable the company to spread its variable cost over a larger tonnage but increase its bargaining clout in the purchase of raw materials.
  • Better quality assets: New Plant of PM 3 Installed and commissioned a Beloit- and Voith-make paper machine from Inland Empire Paper Company. The machine offers the following advantages: With a rated capacity of 85,000 tonnes per annum, the paper machine is the largest in India. With a design speed of 1,200 metres per minute, the machine is the fastest running paper machine in India (breaking the Indian benchmark of 950 metres per minute). With a Bel Baie III pressurized headbox with individual slice adjustment provision and Bel Baie IV twin-wire former with counter blade assembly, this machine is providing superior paper sheet with a good formation and minimal variations on both sheet sides. With a tri-nip press, the post-pressing dryness of the sheet will be around 47 per cent, resulting in low stream consumption and acceptable sheet consolidation. With two stacks of soft-nip calendar, the paper surface will possess a good finish with practically no two-sidedness in normal and glazed newsprint varieties.
  • At Emami Paper, we touch the lives of communities in the following ways: • The contribution for an intensive care unit in the District headquarters Hospital, Balasore. • The adoption of a village in the proximity to transform it into a model showpiece covering the provision of drinking water, street lighting, motorable roads, acceptable sanitation, informed healthcare and adequate education. • The contribution for the creation and maintenance of ponds, wells and tubewells, street lighting, road repair, the provision of facilities for games, religious and social activities through contribution to local clubs. The Company has also constructed culverts in the nearby villages for easy transportation. • Emami Paper operates a fully-equipped first aid center with two full-time doctors and four pharmacists. Apart from attending to the needs of employees and their families, the service is also dispensed to needy people living in the adjoining areas. • The Company also arranges for free health services and the distribution of free medicine on a weekly basis across nine nearby villages. Moreover, a homoeopath and an Ayurvedic doctor are also available for full-time to provide free treatment and medicine. The Company also distributes blankets to the poor and needy. • The Company also conducts free Hepatitis-B and eye camps periodically for employees and the local population. All pre- and post-operative care for cataract treatment is dispensed for free of cost. • In February 2005, the Company conducted an eyen checkup camp in which 125 people were treated for various eye ailments and another 30 were operated for cataract and provided with inter-ocular lenses. • With a view to provide a clean water for cooking and drinking to the adjoining villages, the Company installed 152 tube wells under the Government of Orissa's Drinking water scheme, besides, the Company also commissioned tube wells for providing drinking water as well as undertook renovation of existing tube wells. • The Company provides cold lemon water to the general public during the summer months to provide relief from heat. It also provides coolers for drinking water across various places of worship. Continuing its efforts to spread literacy across the adjoining villages, Emami Paper has undertaken the following initiatives: • Substantial contribution for the construction of building for Degree College at Remuna, Orissa. • Free distribution of exercise notebooks to the students of nearby schools. • Scholarships top meritorius and under-privileges students of nearby schools. Emami Paper has invested substantially in various pollution control measures including an effluent treatment plant. Moreover, trees and medicinal plants are also planted to ensure the effective development of a greenbelt in and around the Company's plant. In its bid to create a green and clean environment, the Company has acquired 80 acres of land in the surrounding areas. It has already undertaken large scale medicinal plantations across the vast land. As a result, several villagers have been provided employment on a daily basis.
  • India's newsprint business is attractive for the following reasons. According to the world Association of Newspapers three Asian countries were among the top-five newspaper markets with china topping the list at 93.5n million copies followed by India at 78.8 million and Japan at 70.4 million copies. The US with 56.6 million copies was at the fourth place while Germany was fifth on the list with 22.1 million copies. There has been an increase in copies sold in China, India and Japan while there has been a decline in the US and German markets. India's top 10 newspapers added over 2.3 million copies to their total circulation and around five million readers in only two years (source : study by Group M) This robust growth is being derived from the national economic growth, large allocation of advertising expenditure towards the print media rising, wider newspaper choice and low per unit cost. More than 48% of the total domestic demand for newsprint was met through imports, providing an adequate room for replacement. The largest English-dominated newspaper houses extended their footprint. Times of India from Mumbai to Kolkata and Chennai, Hindustan Times from Delhi to Kolkata to Mumbai, Indian Express to Kolkata, Bhopal and Jaipur. India's leading Hindi dailies are also moving into different languages and geographies. Dainik Jagran is planning to enter Jammu and Kashmir, while Dainik Bhaskar is expected to make an entry into the attractive Mumbai market with an English newspaper. Several other significant factors are influencing the rising demand for newsprint. The National Readership study in 2005 threw up these interesting results. • Reach of dailies increased from 23% to 245 • Average daily reading time up from 30 minutes to 39 minutes • Out of top 10 dailies across the country, nine are vernacular newspapers. • Nine of the top 10 most-read magazines are also vernacular publications. • Literacy levels up from 55.6% to 64.6% in rural areas and from 79.3% to 84.5% in urban India. The government stands on foreign direct investment (FDI) in print media changed the scenario drastically. In 2002 the government scrapped a half a century ban to allow foreign firms to buy upto 26% in news publications and 74% in non-news titles. This opened the floodgates for global names to make a foray into the Indian Market. Global media's interest in the Indian print media market occurred because : • A staggering 79 million newspapers were sold in India daily in 2004, according to the World Association of Newspaper data. • The Indian Readership Survey estimates that there are 161 million newspaper readers out of the country's billion-plus people. • India's newspapers are outpacing rival local media with advertising revenue growing faster for print than television for the first time. • Print advertising grew 15%n in 2004 to Rs. 54 billion beating television 13% rise. Print makes up 465 of the ad market and TV 41% Emami Paper expects to ride this industry growth across the coming years.
