The Darial Pass (or Darial Gorge) road is a 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) long to 23 kilometer long, narrow gorge in the Caucasus Mountains, serving as a vital, historic, and currently active border crossing between Russia and Georgia. Carved by the Terek River, it has served as a strategic military pass for centuries and is often referred to as the "Gates of Alan" or the Gates of Alexander. It is at the east base of Mount Kazbek, south of present-day Vladikavkaz. The gorge was carved by the river Terek. The steep granite walls of the gorge can be as much as 1,800 metres (5,900 ft) tall in some places. The Georgian Military Road runs through the gorge.
