archaeological site, tell (mound)
An ancient habitation mound (DL-35) located south of modern Bareh Bijeh. The site has yielded remains from the Sukkalmahhu and earlier Middle Elamite periods in the Bronze Age, and possibly from Neo-Elamite times in the Iron Age, followed by a major occupation in the Achaemenid period and later. The identification with the Elamite royal city named Madaktu by the Assyrians and with the town named Badake by the Greeks, however, has been doubted on the grounds that the ostensible size of the site is not large enough to have served as a major center.
