The ancient and early medieval city of Karka d'Maishan, was earlier known as Kharax Spasinou and earlier yet as Antiokheia and Alexandreia. It is identified with the unexcavated remains of a city at Jabal Khayabar, also known as Naysan (which recalls the area's old name Maishan). During the Hellenistic period, it formed a vassal kingdom called Mesene (Maishan) or Characene under the suzerainty of the Parthian Empire. Later it was the seat of a Nestorian bishop.
