Abadan (Persian: آبادان) is a city in the Khuzestan province in southwestern Iran. It lies on Abadan Island, on the Arvand river. In 2005, the population was estimated to be at 415,139. The civilian population of the city dropped to near zero during the eight-years Iran-Iraq war. In 1992, only 84,774 had returned to live in the city. By 2001, the population had jumped to 206,073, only to double in the past five years.

It’s really sad to see people who are themselves subject to racist stereotyping and suppression use such demeaning, foul language to describe themselves and others: “Araboo, Smelly Arab, Arab Killer, Nazi Persians, Majoos, Persian Khanzirs.”
Most of you, if not all, seem to be living in Europe and the U.S. and if some white racist bigot used such language to attack you, you would probably want to smash their face.
Please stop it. Identity politics has always been divisive. Look at the map again without the usual blinding political prisms. Can’t you see how vast it is and how little of it has been utilised? Is it that impossible for Arabs and Persians, Turks, Kurds, Lors, Balooch, Turkman and what not, live together with dignity and mutual respect?

I say Sheikh Khazaal and the the Shah had more in common than with either Mr Dris (my right hand neighbour) or Mr Malayeri (my left hand neighbour) and vice versa. The Sheikh and the Shah, regardless of their collision/collusion, were both in the pocket of the British. Mr Dris and Mr Malayeri, on the other hand, both wanted the British out and oil nationalised and the oil workers lives bettered. Now who do you think would benefit if Dris and Malayeri were continuously at each others throat and calling oneanother Araboo or Persian khanzir? Actually Mr Dris’s son married Mr Malayeri’s daughter (and was later killed fighting Saddam’s army). On the other side, Reza shah’s son married king Farough’s daughter Fouzieh. Each to their own. So, please don’t tell me Fars/ Arab is the great divide.
More later on the history of Khuzestan, Arab inhabitants and the oppression of Arabs there.

By the way, Abadan and Khorramshahr never had any mineral resources except pure water. Abadan was called an oil City because of the oil refinery. The oil was transported via seven pipes(if I remember correctly) from elsewhere. Remember the large diameter pipes passing across the city at Istgah Haft?
Prior to 1913 Abadan was nothing but a small fishing village with a population of 50. Gospeh Manuhi even was more important. Khorramshahr has always been a town going back at least five hundred years known by its Arabic name Mohammareh. It was an important port even then.
more later,
Hassoun
