An important Early Bronze Age city-state, 𒉢𒁓𒆷𒆠 Lagash formed a kingdom together with the city of Girsu to its northwest and the city of Nina to its southeast. Under Eannatum c. 2400 BC Lagash claimed a leading position in southern Mesopotamia, having defeated its northern rival Umma. Uruinimgina is famous as an early political reformer, but in the mid-2300 BC he was defeated by Lugal-zagesi of Umma and Uruk. In the 2100s BC Lagash enjoyed a renewed prosperity under Gudea, but seems to have declined in political importance afterwards. In the middle Bronze Age the city of Urukug (probably another name for Lagash) served as the political center of the kingdom of the Sealand, which was conquered by the Kassite kings of Babylon in the mid-1400s BC.
