On Saturday, October 1, 2005, OU student Joel Henry Hinrichs III committed a suicide bombing on a bench outside of George Lynn Cross Hall. The bomb detonated at about 8:00 pm while a football game (with over 84,000 fans in attendance) was taking place about 500 feet away. The blast was audible to those in the stadium. Only Hinrichs was killed in the explosion, and the bench was the only destruction.
