Rutten (French: Russon) is a village in the Belgian province of Limburg and a sub-municipality of Tongeren, it was an independent municipality until the municipal reorganization of 1977.
It is not possible to determine exactly how old Rutten is. Inhabitation has been demonstrated in the Neolithic and Roman times, as remains of several Roman villas and two tumuli were found.
Rutten was mentioned as Hreotio (947); Riuti (1018); Riweceuns (1146); Ruttines (1178); Rutis (12th century); and Ruisnon (1214). The meaning of the name is unclear.
