Kwaadmechelen

Belgium / Limburg / Tessenderlo /
 village, draw only border

Kwaadmechelen is a village in the Belgian province of Limburg, and the westernmost sub-municipality of the municipality of Ham. It was an independent municipality until the 1977 merger with Oostham to form the new municipality of Ham. In terms of soil and folklore, Kwaadmechelen belongs to the Zuiderkempen.

In addition to the center, the sub-municipality has two more villages: Genebos is located between the canal and the highway and Genendijk is located on the west side of the highway. Both villages had their own church, but Genebos' church was withdrawn from worship in 2008.

Kwaadmechelen was first mentioned in 1179, as Quaedmechelen. This is a compound of quaed (small), maghin (large), and lo (swamp forest). So: a small settlement in a large, swampy swamp forest.
