The partly preserved fortified perimeter of ancient and medieval Volos. The best-preserved traces of the fortifications are in the northwestern corner. The settlement constitutes a tell (habitation mound formed by successive layers of habitation), and thanks to recent discoveries from the Mycenaean Period (Bronze Age), has been identified plausibly with ancient Iolkos, famous as the point of departure for Jason and the Argonauts in Greek myth.
