James Earl Jones Theatre Expansion (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / West New York / New York City, New York / West 48th Street, 138

6-story modernist expansion of the neighboring historic theater, completed in 2022. Designed by Kostow Greenwood Architects, it is clad on the west side in cream-colored terra-cotta paneling, and on the recessed and slightly taller east side in smaller, dark-brown terra-cotta panels. Linking the two parts (the beige section being wider) is a large corner bay of windows that runs from the 2nd through the 6th floor. Each plate-glass window is square, with one facing north and one facing east, all framed in powder-coated, gold-colored aluminum. A pair of vertical signs are mounted to the beige part of the facade; the top one reads "JONES" in descending letter, and the bottom one is a 2-sided portrait of the actor James Earl Jones.

The expansion provides patrons with new lounge and bar space on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floors. The actors get new rehearsal space, a wardrobe room, and there are also two new changing rooms for the chorus members.
