Paal (Limburgish: Poël) is a village and sub-municipality of the city of Beringen, in the Belgian-Limburg Kempen (Zuiderkempen), it was an independent municipality until the municipal reorganization of 1977. Paal borders Tessenderlo, Ham, Diest, Lummen and Beringen. Outside the center, the sub-municipality still consists of the hamlets of Tervant and Brelaar-Heide.
Paal was mentioned in the 15th century as Pale, Paele or Pael. This probably comes from the Latin: palus, meaning swamp.
Paal was part of the buitinghe (outside area) of Beringen and is still popularly called "De Buiting" today.
