Beringen (Limburgish: Berringe) is a Belgian municipality and capital of the canton of Beringen. With 48,108 inhabitants, this former mining municipality is the third largest municipality in the province of Limburg, after Hasselt and Genk.
Beringen was first mentioned in 1120, as Ber-ing, or the hometown (inga-heim) of a certain Bero. The name has nothing to do with a bear, as can be found on the later Beringen coat of arms.
The city of Beringen consists of four sub-municipalities that themselves have a number of residential areas or hamlets:
-Beringen
-Paal with the hamlets of Tervant and Brelaar-Heide
-Koersel with the hamlet of Stal
-Beverlo with the hamlet of Korspel
