Eksel (former spelling: Exel) is a village in the Belgian province of Limburg and a sub-municipality of Hechtel-Eksel in the Kempen, it was an independent municipality until the municipal reorganization of 1977.
The first mention of Eksel is from 714, as Ochinsala, the basic name of the hamlet of Hoksent on the Dommel River. Ochinsala probably means 'the place of residence of Oko': a contraction of the personal name Oka/Oko and of sala which means hall, place of residence (J. Mansion). In the 11th century Eksel is mentioned as Ekinsala and in 1153 there is mention of Hecsele, a possible contraction of agnis (magpie) and lauha (grove on high sandy soil).
