The South Frederica Commercial District was built after the completion of the Wendell H. Ford Expressway (Owensboro Bypass) in the late 1960s. The main landmark was Owensboro's Town Square Mall. The area is seeing declines as many box stores move to the newer developments at the Highway 54 Commercial District. This has led to the decline and eventual closing of Town Square Mall.
