Centennial Bridge

Panama / Paraiso /

The Centennial Bridge is the second major crossing of the Panama Canal after the Bridge of the Americas. The cable-stayed bridge is a key part of the Pan American Highway, carrying six lanes of traffic (2x3). Named for the centennial of Panama's independence (which occurred in 2003), it was constructed from March 2002 to August 2004 and opened to traffic in September 2005 when the highways leading to it were finished. The bridge has a total length of 1,052 m (3,451 ft), a main span of 420 m (1,050 ft), a height of 184 m (604 ft), a width of 34 m (112 ft), and a clearance of 80 m (262 ft) below the deck.

Part of the access highway to the centennial Bridge collapsed in December 2010 due to heavy rain and flooding. Traffic was restored by November 2011.
