bridge, road bridge
This is the Bridge of the Americas, a road bridge spanning the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal. Designed by Sverdrup & Parcel, it was constructed from October 1959 to October 1962 at a cost of US$20,000,000. It was a key part of the Pan American Highway until 2004. The bridge is a cantilever design where the suspended span is a tied arch. Carrying four lanes of vehicular traffic, it has a total length of 1,654 m (5,425 ft), a main span of 344 m (1,128 ft), a height of 117 m (384 ft), a width of 10 m (34 ft), and a clearance of 61 m (201 ft) below the deck. Until 1979, it was named the Thatcher Ferry Bridge. Originally carrying 9,500 vehicles per day, this increased over time, and the AADT ended up at 35,000 by 2004.
