A high-density neighbourhood built from scratch on a former coastal meadow in the Municipality of Copenhagen, surrounded partly by allotment gardens, partly by a green area embanked from the sea in the 1930s. The oldest parts from the 1990s are today considered somewhat outdated architectonically but development is still ongoing as of the 2020s. The sale of the district's plots partly financed the Copenhagen Metro. The name originally stems from the 1960s' vision of the combined city of Copenhagen and Malmö on both sides of the Sound, Øresund, when the bridge was eventually built, with -stad being a word for city in both Danish and Swedish. Curiously, around 1990 the name was instead used for this new district straddling the transport link leading to the bridge on the Danish side, although it is not situated at the Øresund.
