The slipway was constructed before 1853 of massive sandstone blocks arranged to form a ramp that rises to 1.1 metres above the rock floor. The slipway seems to have been used for boats importing coal and/or for carring casks of burnt lime for the alum industry on Saltwick Bay. Alum was principally used in the textile industry as a fixing agent for clothing dyes. It was also used by tanners to produce supple leather. Alum was quarried here from 1649 until 1791 and originally the alum was sent (before the construction of the Saltwick Bay Alum House), via boat, to South Shields for processing.
