university, office building, classrooms
4-story education/office building completed in 1955. Designed as a shoe factory, it originally housed Miles Shoes, then was acquired by CUNY's John Jay College of Criminal Justice in 1973 to house 60 instructional classrooms, all science laboratories, 2 lecture halls, faculty and student dining facilities, counseling services, academic computer labs, the college bookstore, most academic departmental offices and some administrative offices.
Now that the so-called New Building to the southwest has been finished and formally opened on 11 October 2011 it is anticipated that this building will in due course become surplus to requirement and may be returned to the City of New York for redevelopment.
The North Hall is clad in light-brown brick with long ribbon bands of windows divided into bays by brown metal piers. Each bay has 5-over-4 short horizontal panes. The long south facade spans 15 bays, although the west end bays are shorter, with openings only having 3-over-3 panes, and the north facade has 11 bays. The main entrances are on 59th Street, in the 5th-7th bays from the west, each recessed with three sets of glass-and-metal double-doors below metal canopies and projecting flagpoles. The 4th bay from the east has a non-recessed secondary entrance, with one set of glass-and-metal double-doors next to four tall windows. There is a metal service door at the far east and, and a double-set of service doors near the west end. On 60th Street there is a large freight entrance with roll-down metal gate near the center of the facade, with metal service doors to its right. There are no ground-floor openings on the west facade other than the ribbon band of windows. A number of protruding air-conditioning units dot the facades at the ribbon bands. The roof line is marked by a metal coping and railing.
