apartment building, Modern (architecture)
210-foot, 16-story mid-century modern residential building completed in 1950. Designed by George F. Pelham, it is clad in red brick above a 2-story limestone base across most of the Park Avenue side, with limestone bands extending at the ground level and at the top of the 2nd floor to the ends, and around to the west half of the south facade on 36th Street. At the north end is a recessed bay with three single-windows at the ground floor, and a triple-window and single-window bay at the 2nd-3rd floors. From the 4th floor up, the triple-window is replaced by glass doors opening onto balconies with brick fronts topped by short metal railings that align with the rest of the facade. This is mirrored by another recessed bay at the south end. In the middle, the main entrance has glass double-doors below a peaked, grey canvas canopy extending out over the sidewalk. To each side the ground floor has a square 2-over-2 window and a single-window. The upper floors have three single-windows in the middle, above the entry, and a triple-window and single-window to either side. The facade is dotted with protruding air-conditioning units. The end bays with balconies set back above the 13th floor, where there is an angled balcony at both ends, with angled corners on the floors above. The middle section of the facade is slightly recessed at the 14th floor, with a small metal canopy, and set back on the top two floors.
The south facade's west half has two widely-spaced single-windows, a triple-window, and another single-window (five single-windows at the ground floor). The east half is recessed, with a single-window, two triple-windows, and a double-window (at the ground floor there is a small service entrance with a black door, atop a small, walled stoop, followed by two pairs of single-windows and a double-window. The east-facing side wall next to the recessed area has a bay of single-windows.
The building contains 115 apartment units.
