This tree was the Thousand Mile mark when measured from Omaha, Nebraska, when the railroad line was being constructed in 1869. The tree would stand until 1900, when it died during a drought. Over the years, the railroad would be realigned, causing this tree to now be at mile marker 959.56.

In 1982, Union Pacific Railroad planted a new pine tree here to commemorate the site and even installed a water source for the tree to draw upon.
