Established in 1888 by cattle baron Bartlett Richards, the Spade, Nebraska's largest ranch, became infamous during its land conspiracy trials beginning in 1904 which resulted in the imprisonment and untimely death of Richards. Acquired by rancher Lawrence Bixby in 1923 the Spade continues to be operated today by the Bixby Family.
