The Chinese PLA took up positions on the north side of the mountain after being halted by the elements of 181 Brigade in October of 1962 . The PLA found it difficult to pass through the bottle neck between Ashi Hill and the High Plateau opposite it across the Lohit river. The Indians positioned themselves on the 'West Ridge' south of this hill across the Namti Nullah but fell short of occupying the peaks of Green and Yellow Pimples towards which the Chinese cut a path for troops and telephone wire leading to violent outflanking and domination of Indian positions and subsequent battle for Walong.
