This is a 0.8 mile viaduct carrying U.S. Route 29 (Whitehurst Freeway Northwest) over Water Street Northwest and K Street Northwest along the Georgetown Waterfront in Washington, D.C. It is a 76 span, steel girder and floorbeam system bridge with concrete deck, built from 1947 to 1949 and last reconstructed in 1998.
It was originally planned as part of the later cancelled Inner Loop freeway in D.C. Since the freeway was never finished, there have been multiple proposals over the years to remove the viaduct and improve Water Street and K Street below. However, these proposals have never been carried out due to costs and engineering challenges.
