Rock Formations in the Kaleto Area

This peculiar phenomenon is sculpted by nature on the southern slope of Ustra peak, at the foot of which is located the village of Ustren, Dzhebel municipality. The rock formations are composed of beautiful gray and violet-gray rhyolites. These are huge rock ridges of different shapes: prismatic, stepped, conical. They are from 5m to 15m high, some even more and forming original rock compositions. In 1972 they were designated as a protected monument with area of 224decares. Some interesting plant species occur in the surrounding area. Right behind the rock formations and along their northern slopes is located the only in the region field of two high altitude mountain plants – cornel stick (Cotoneaster intergerimus) and Amelanchier ovalis from Rosaceae family. At the same place but in the cracks of the rocks is the second in Bulgaria field of the rare species of Silene lerchenfeldiana from Caryophyllaceal family. That plant usually occurs at altitudes higher than 2000m and Ustra peak is 1015m high. A big field of the valuable herb golden rod (Solidago virga aurea) and other rare species were also discovered.
