In 1900 James Gordon and Wilian Pagel established a small bakery at the corner of Chene Street and Hendricks Street. By 1907 it had expanded and was producing 50,000 two pound loafs a day. Further additions followed and in 1926 the name was changed to Gordon Bakery. It was one year later when the bakery introduced their Silvercup brand. As a sponsor of the Lone Ranger radio program, they were able to have the Ranger's horse renamed Silver.
Further expansion to Long Island followed. In 1964 the name of the company was changed to Silvercup shortly before the 300,000 sq. ft., Detroit factory was forced to close down in 1970 as part of a bankruptcy proceeding.
