These Islands have caused many shipwrecks in the past when Lough Corrib was used as the main transportation to and from Galway for industry. In the 19th Century Sulphur from mines in Connemara were shipped to Galway city and the boats returned with seaweed for fertilizer.

In 1839 the Son of the Marquess of Sligo of Westport House drowned off Doon with two companions when their sailing skiff was capsized by a sudden squall.
