  Gorumna is an island in South Connemara 56 km west of Galway city. Predominantly an Irish speaking community, much of its land is marginal to farming and fishing is traditionally engaged in by many families on the island. Between 1996 and 2002 the population of Gorumna declined by 10% in comparison with an increase of 9% in the aggregate rural areas of the county.
