A former unincorporated town on the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal. It was the location of a battle during the Revolutionary War, the Battle of Great Bridge. It was the final County Seat of Norfolk County, after the seat had been moved from the Independent City of Portsmouth. Today it is a suburban community within the City of Chesapeake.
