Balasore Zilla School is one of the oldest Government run schools of Orissa which imparts quality higher secondary education. In the prevailing situation where English medium schools are preferred over vernacular schools demand for admission in to this school has not waned over the years. In the face of stiff competition from English medium Schools many established vernacular schools are experiencing dwindling admission numbers year over year. But fortunately, even today many parents prefer to send their wards to this school which has an illustrious history of outstanding teachers and students. This school has shaped the future of many prominent personalities who did remarkable work in the fields of art, science, medicine, engineering and business. The school while draws inspiration from its illustrious past never the less it strives to achieve greater heights in a completely changed educational scenario where teacher-student relationship today has become more of a contract. In the past when education had not attained the scale of an industry teachers found profound pride at the academic success of their students and the students in turn treasured fond memories of their teachers for life.

Nowadays teachers flaunt the students' success to lure in more prospective candidates to their tuition class. Today's teachers are more of professionals like an architect,a mechanic or a surgeon where the relationship ends as soon as the job is over. This is no way an attempt to demean the teachers but an honest observation of the general educational trend from which this school has also not escaped altogether. This disturbing trend is more evident to people who grew up in a atmosphere where the intensity of teacher-student relationship was never determined solely on the basis of mark percentages and the student's paying capacity.

Today academic success is measured as to how much it translates in absolute monetary terms irrespective of any ethical or social commitment of a person which are but very essential for a society to achieve progress and development. As a result of undue emphasis on a percentage driven academic excellence along with the coaching class culture, we have produced hoards of top notch self centric professionals in every field who instead of helping the society to achieve progress, prioritize their personal development and gratifications. In effect we are producing some very good students who have little or no social responsibility and can be best compared to money making machines. It is not wrong to make money but making money by side stepping social values responsibilities, ethics and morality is highly deplorable. May be this is a collateral damage that the society has to bear so long as an individual's success is measured in monetary terms. Although we denounce corrupt engineers, doctors, bureaucrats, politicians, police man, govt. employees but never the less these same people enjoy certain social status because of their money, although ill gotten. This is a strange paradox in our society where honesty is not respected or rewarded but dishonesty is rewarded with deliberate indifference. Its a world of I,me and mine and fools are those who cling on to sentiments, values and ethics.

This post is not an attempt to denigrate the school or it's teachers but this is more of an general observation that prevails in today's educational scenario.
