Opened in 2006, this part of the permanent exhibition initially presented paintings of which the Samuel von Brukenthal’s collection was deprived along time, being recuperated at a later date.
Are to be mentioned here the works transferred in 1948 by the communist authorities to the Art Museum in Bucharest and recovered in 2006 (Lotto, da Messina, Brueghel the Younger, van Eyck, Memling, Jordaens, Teniers, Wouwerman, Magnasco, Carriera – Selfportrait). Also participate in the selection four paintings stolen in 1968 and recovered in 1998 (Bouts, Titian, van Mieris and Carriera – Portrait of a woman).
At the present, the exhibition also display works by Veronese, Cranach, Rubens, Tullio Lombardo, Hans von Aachen, Annibale Carracci, van Ravesteyn, van Reymerswaele, etc. that brought renown to the Brukenthal art collection as early as the time of its establishment, in the 18th c. Vienna.
