The TWA Flight Center opened in 1962 at JFK International Airport. Designed by Eero Saarinen, it was sculpted as an abstract symbol of flight. It is considered one of the most architecturally distinguished airport terminal designs in the world. With the demise of TWA, it closed in 2001, The adjoining terminal was demolished in 2005 for construction of JetBlue's new Terminal 5, which opened in 2008.

Saarinen's historic Flight Center sat largely empty until 2016, when construction began on a 512-room hotel designed by Lubrano Ciavarra Architects in collaboration with Beyer Blinder Belle which include the restored Flight Center as its lobby for MCR Morse to become the TWA Hotel. The rooms, designed by Stonehill Taylor, feature Knoll furnishings, reproduction David Klein posters, martini bars, vintage rotary phones, and terrazzo-tiled bathrooms with Hollywood-style vanities. The event spaces were designed by INC Architecture & Design to include a banquet hall and 45 meeting rooms in the same Saarinen-inspired fashion.

The hotel reopened on May 15, 2019, with a formal opening date that September. Landscaping was designed by Mathews Nielsen Landscape Architects. In 2021, the lower level event space was used as a filming location for a music video by the band Parquet Courts.
