Hotel Newton (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / West New York / New York City, New York / Broadway, 2528

9-story Beaux-Arts hotel completed in 1913. Designed by Ross & McNeil, it is clad in beige brick and terra-cotta above a 2-story base with metal-and-glass storefronts on the ground floor and rusticated limestone at the 2nd floor. The entrance is at the center, between the storefronts, with a glass-and-metal door, narrow sidelights, and transom in a red granite surround, below a dark-red canvas canopy. The 2nd floor has three bays of single-windows in the middle, with double-window end bays that have brown iron mullions and bracketed sills.

The upper floors have three bays of double-windows, and a bay of small bathroom windows between the middle and south bays. The 3rd floor is transitional, with stone banding across the brick, and terra-cotta quoins framing the window bays. There are stone band courses at the top and bottom, with projecting stone balconies at each main bay with four large modillions between console brackets at the ends. They have wrought-iron railings, and the 3rd-floor windows are topped by terra-cotta lintels with keystones and metopes at the ends.

The 4th-7th floors also have terra-cotta quoins at each bay, beveled at the inner edges, and there are terra-cotta spandrels between the floors within each main bay that are decorated with garlands and keystones. Topping these three bays at the 7th floor are three large cartouches surrounded by elaborate garlands and foliage, with a band course setting off the 8th floor.

The 8th floor is also banded, including across the surrounds, which have keystones. The piers have oversized brackets wrapped with wreaths, supporting a projecting cornice with modillions and dentils. Above the cornice, the 9th floor has a wrought-iron railing spanning across, and the windows behind have stone surrounds with keystones; there are ribbed panels topping the piers, and the facade is crowned by a blank roof parapet.

The ground floor is occupied by Maxene Cleaners, West Side Gourmet, and Refresh Nail & Spa.
