NYCHA Sondra Thomas Apartments (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / West New York / New York City, New York / West 91st Street, 102
 apartment building, Modern (architecture)

11-story residential building completed in 1994. Designed by James McCullar for the New York City Housing Authority, it is clad in red brick. The 10-bay front facade has narrow double-windows on the upper floors, and exposed concrete floor plates. The ground floor (with concrete banding) has two metal service doors at the east end, followed by a double-window in the 2nd bay (with a vent to the left), and the main entrance recessed in the 3rd-4th bays. It has glass-and-metal double-doors on the left, with narrow sidelights and a transom, and on the right is a 4-over-4 grid window with dark-green metal framing. A shallow-arched concrete lintel covers the entry area across both bays. Continuing to the west are four bays of double-windows (shorter than those on the upper floors) and a metal service door at the far end.

The two western bays are very slightly recessed, and terminate at the 10th floor. The two bays above the entrance are also recessed, and have a shallow-peaked pediment at the roof line. The eastern two bays extend up to a mechanical penthouse with a singe-window.

The east elevation has two bays of narrow double-windows, with much wider floor plates at the south end, which rises up higher than the north side. The south window bay has floor-to-ceiling windows with thin, pale-green metal spandrels between floors. The west elevation has two bays of double-windows flanking a center bay of single-windows. The rear, south-facing facade has the same layout as the north facade.

The building contains 87 public housing apartment units for seniors.
