Valley of the Queens

Egypt / Qina / Armant /
 valley, necropolis, archaeological site

A valley in the hills west of ancient Thebes, where many New Kingdom (Dynasty 18-Dynasty 20) queens, princesses, and princes were buried in rock-cut tombs. While the modern conventional name is Valley of the Queens (in Arabic, Wadi al-Malikat), the more traditional Arabic name Biban al-Harim ("Gates of the Harem") is more accurate, being less specific than the conventional English rendition. During Dynasty 19, Sety I and Ramesses II built large clusters of tombs for their female relatives on the south and north sides of the valley, respectively. Most of the male royals buried in the valley were sons of Ramesses III and his successors (Dynasty 20). The tombs in the Valley of the Queens are conventional numbers preceded by the abbreviation QV ("Queens' Valley").
