In its earlier years, this ranch was one of the Yampa Valley's largest producers of hay and livestock. Its second owner was Farrington Reed Carpenter, the first director of the Federal Grazing Service (which is known today as the Bureau of Land Management). Carpenter played an important role in shaping land use and management policy in the U.S. government.
