Established in 1899 the University Club restricted membership to those who had graduated university or college. In 1931, the Club constructed a three story Collegiate Gothic clubhouse featuring squash and racquetball courts, a two story Grand Hall and 24 bedrooms on the third floor. In 1978 women were allowed to join the club but a declining membership lead to bankruptcy and closure of the Club in 1992. The YMCA acquired the property and operated until 2008 when operating costs forced closure. The abandoned building was destroyed by fire in 2013.
