A copy of the Serpentine Column installed in Delphi in 2015. In 479 BC. the allied army of Greek cities under the leadership of the Spartan general Pausanias defeated the impressive Persian army at the battle of Plateia and stopped the Achaemenid advance on the territory of Greece. In gratitude for the victory, the tenth of the rich booty that the Greeks dedicated to the gods. In the sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi, near the altar, an 8-meter bronze column was erected, cast from the melted weapons of the Persians. The hollow column was made in the form of three intertwined snakes. Probably this symbolism is related to the story of how Apollo killed the serpent Python, who guarded the Delphic sanctuary.
