Historic irrigation tunnel listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Built between 1905 and 1909, the tunnel provides agricultural irrigation from the Gunnison River to otherwise arid land in the Uncompahgre Valley. The tunnel is 5.8 miles long, and lies 2,200 feet beneath Vernal Mesa at its deepest point. The tunnel is also recognized as a National Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers.
