School of the Blessed Sacrament

USA / New Jersey / West New York /

On 70th Street, the School of the Blessed Sacrament is clad in limestone, metal, and glass. It has three main bays, and two narrower end bays, both of which have red metal double-doors slightly recessed between projecting buttresses, and set below pointed-arches. On the upper floors the narrow end bays have tall openings divided by stone spandrels into upper and lower squares each with a 6x6 metal screen of small, open circles. At the 6th floor there is no spandrel in the center, and the opening is framed by a projecting Gothic surround. At the ground floor the three middle bays have three square openings with 6-over-3 small panes, although the middle opening in the center bay has stone infill. Above each of these is a recessed panel with projecting letters in a Gothic script, which together spell out a Latin phrase: Parentes Catholicos Hortamur Ut: Dilectae Proli:Suae Educationem Christianam Et Catholicam Procurant, which translates to: We urge Catholic parents to arrange for the Christian, Catholic education of their beloved children.

The 2nd-6th floors have grey-brown metal infill, with most bays arranged into four windows in grey metal framing, with short lower panes, and metal panels above. The stone spandrels between the 3rd-6th floors have Gothic patterns such as quatrefoils. The two piers framing the center bay have niches at the 3rd floor with slender octagonal columns on which are perched statues. These two piers have angled projections at the 6th floor that are topped by crosses. The two outer of the middle bays are slightly recessed at the 7th floor, and the end bays have angled sides, and are topped by conical slate roofs with copper cresting. The center bay is crowned by a gable with carved stonework tracery reminiscent of floral forms, behind which rises a large, steep-sloped slate roof.
