Restaurant building designed c. 1934 in the Spanish Colonial Revival style by Bloch & Hesse with a capacity for seating over 2,500 people. The design features sand-colored stuccoed walls, low sloping red Mission tile roofs, arched entrances, arcuated corbel tables, decorative ironwork, and leaded glass windows.

After Irving's death, it was forced to shut down in 1977. Later revivals have been similarly unsuccessful. It was designated a New York City landmark in 1992.
