Due to the numerous wrecks that occurred along the coastline here, the Punta Gorda light was installed in 1911. A fog signal building, 4th Fresnel light, blacksmith/carpenter shop, three large homes with storage sheds, and a barn were built here. Management of the station was eventually taken over by the U.S. Coast Guard, who left in 1951. At the time of its closure, this was the costliest lighthouse to operate in the Coast Guard's 12th District due to logistics involved transporting fuel and oil here to keep the light operating.

Due to squatters, the Bureau of Land Management burned down all of the wooden buildings in 1970. The lighthouse and its associated oil house were placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
