The 160-acre District, which encompasses the original land patent issued in 1866 to Joseph Russ, includes Eel River bottomland and
some forested land within two miles of the Pacific Ocean. The focal point of the District is Fern Cottage, a settlement-period farmhouse. There are a total of 16 contributing building that compromise the historical portion of this land. The current occupants of the Fern Cottage, located on the land and for which this region is named, are descendants/heirs of the original settlers.
