Shad Thames (London)

United Kingdom / England / London
 neighbourhood, interesting place

Shad Thames, interesting street containing old factory buildings, was the setting for Fagin's Den in Charles Dickens' Book - Oliver Twist. The street name originates from the parish of St John, Horsleydown and was formerly St-John-at-Thames. This was part of the narrow medieval riverside route, developed by the monks of Bermondsey Abbey as part of their river wall or flood defences. It became an important street for warehousing and wharfage in the the Victorian period and some industrial uses survived into the early 1990s. A lot of the original industrial buildings survive to give the area its unique atmosphere, although the famous smell of spices has gone. Many of the buildings are quite successful mock-ups in the warehouse style.
