In the 18th century the discovery of a spring in the area led to Bermondsey becoming a leisure retreat. The spa was established in this area outlined. However, the area fell into a slow decline not least due to the movement of trade to larger docks and great influx of dock labour exacebated by the wide steam train line bisecting the area through the middle (today electrified) and a few noxious factories, giving rise to a leading authority court case in nuisance stating that 'what passes for a nuisance in Belgrave Square may not pass for a nuisance in Bermondsey' reflecting its nadir in London status. In World War Two the primary target of the Luftwaffe within London was east of Westminster along the river - the Docklands. Now a group with the partnership of Southwark Council and Hyde Homes has begun the restoration and regeneration of the area, which will, when finished, have over 2000 new homes (40% of which will be affordable), a new Pharmacy, Dental practice, improved community facilities, and new offices and shops.
