Established 26 October 1862 as Camp Douglas. Redesignated Fort Douglas on 30 December 1878. Designated in honor of Stephen A. Douglas, US Senator from Illinois.

Formerly home to the Headquarters, 6th Infantry Brigade from 1922 to 1927 and 1931 to 1939, the Headquarters, 20th Bombardment Wing from 1940 to 1941, the 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry from 1919 to 1921, the 38th Infantry, less 1st Battalion from 1922 to 1939, the 5th Air Base Squadron from 1940 to 1941, the 11th Bombardment Squadron from 1940 to 1941, the 22nd Bombardment Squadron from 1940 to 1941) and the 88th Reconnaissance Squadron from 1940 to 1941.
