Designed for ferry medium and heavy tanks, self-propelled artillery installations and medium tanks with mine trawls when the crossing water obstacles.

Created in the Experimental Design Office (OKB) of engineering troops under the leadership of Anatoly Kravtsev based on the components and assemblies of the floating tank PT-76 and conveyor K-61. The ferry is formed from two semi-pairs — right and left. Each half-pair consists of a driving machine, an outboard (boat) tank and a ramp. The right and left semi-pairs, as well as their leading cars and boats are not interchangeable and differ from each other in the arrangement of assemblies and units. The ferry can only be deployed on water by joining the leading machines and unfolding the boats and ramps of the right and left semi-steam vessels.
