Grand People's Study House (Pyongyang)

DPRK equivalent of the Library of Congress or the British Library; this building is an overt demonstration that Korean-style socialism emphasizes the essential role and function of the intellectual. The North Korean education system (Juche Education, if you like) is based on the principle of "study while working". This was part of the extensive construction in P'yŏngyang in honor of President Kim il Sung's 70th birthday in 1982. It was initially going to be called the Kim il Sung Library, but President Kim demurred to the people. The architecture of the place is traditional Korean with 34 saddle roofs topped with 750,000 green tiles. The Study House allegedly has 30,000,000 million volumes within it. With the proper authorization, a Korean may enjoy the sounds of The Beatles. Paul McCartney's "Yesterday" is a popular karaoke selection in P'yŏngyang.
