archaeological site, Roman Empire, Medieval / Middle Ages
An archaeological site indicating the location of ancient and medieval Thérouanne. In the Roman period Tervanna was the capital of the Gallic tribe called Morini. In the Middle Ages, the town was the seat of a bishop. Thérouanne was razed to the ground in 1553 by order of Emperor Karl V. The name of the town was inherited by a small settlement that was located outside the town's walls.
